In order to gain muscle your workout needs to include 50/50 mix of basic workout routines (bench press/Deadlifts.Squats) and isolation exercises. Exercises such as squats requires the body to use several muscle groups resulting in bigger gains. When your body is stressed it releases growth hormones  resulting in muscle growth.  Stressing your muscles requires variation of muscle confusion and basic sets. Always track your results.
